Andrew Mercer

Partner & Head of the Family Team

Andrew is one of Trethowans’ most experienced solicitors. Qualifying as a solicitor in 1989, Andrew became a partner with the firm in 1995, joining the management board in 2003 and being named chairman in 2009.

Andrew’s main area of expertise is family law – divorce, separation, financial provision, civil partnerships and other related issues. He is particularly adept at handling complex, high net worth settlements which involve family partnerships, businesses, farms, foreign property or trusts. He also advises clients on prenuptial agreements and all issues relating to children, including residence, contact and education.

Andrew strongly advocates the benefits of a no-court, non-confrontational approach to family law – especially in the resolution of issues which involve both finance and children. He is also a longstanding member and an accredited specialist with Resolution, an independent body representing solicitors that have an affinity for family law.

Away from the office…

Andrew is a keen sports supporter. Previously a keen competitive swimmer, Andrew still occasionally undertakes a long-distance sea swim – and his children play a large part in his sporting interests. His daughter is in the running for a place in the under-16 England National hockey squad, while his son has played rugby for Salisbury, Wiltshire and Dorset.

When he’s not in the stands at the hockey or the rugby, Andrew moonlights as a reluctant stable hand for his wife, who owns a CCI three-day eventer named Platoon de L’Hocre – the horse now competes on the national circuit.

With a passion for live music, Andrew can be spotted at numerous festivals and concerts throughout the year – much to the embarrassment of his children! He also spends time walking and surfing on the North Cornish coast.
